1841 Census
In the 1841 Census (though difficult to read) John Stonard, (70), Clergyman, is living with the following, presumably at the old Aldingham Hall, or at the Rectory, all identified as male or female servants: Jas Vince (55); Philadelphia Vince (50); John Vince (50), Edward Scholick (15); Hannah Scholick (20); Mary Helling (45); Hanah Helling (40); Margt. Kendal (20); George Vince (15 sic) Cabinet Maker; Sarah Vince (15), Milliner. (All spellings as on the form – though Vince looks like Brice or Bince)
1851 Census
The 1851 Census provides a little more insight. Living in Upper Church Street, Ulverston, are James Vince (70), retired butler, born Crondall, Hampshire; Philadelphia Vince (59), born Wrotham, Kent; and Elizabeth Park (16), House-servant, born Ulverston.
This suggests that James Vince was Rev. Dr. Stonard’s butler. He was remembered in Stonard’s will: He gave the income from 3 shares of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and Douglas Navigation to “my old and highly valued servants James Vince and Philadelphia his wife and the survivor of them …” , after which ownership passed to Edward Jones Schollick.
1851 Census
By 1851 Census, son George (29) was living at 36 Cable Street, Lancaster, (currently the number of The Bobbin public house) where he was a wine and spirit merchant, with wife Elizabeth (33), both born Aldingham, and their children Thomas Ashburner Vince (5), Bridget Philadelphia Vince (2), and James (2 months).
1861 Census
By the 1861 Census James is already dead, so Philadelphia, aged 70, is living at 33 Cable Street, Lancaster. Here Ancestry names the family as Cruce. The household consists of George Vince (39), Head, Auctioneer, born Aldingham; Thomas (15), son, ironmonger, born Lancaster; Bridget (12), daughter, scholar, born Lancaster; James (10) son, scholar, born Lancaster; George (5), son, born Lancaster; Philadelphia (70), mother, railway shareholder, born Wortham (sic), Kent; Ellenoar (sic) Parton (29), domestic servant, born Cockerham, Lancs.
1871 Census
The 1871 Census finds the family at 41 Cable Street, Lancaster, where the household is now George Vince (49), auctioneer and appraiser, born Aldingham; Elizabeth (37), wife, born Heversham, Westmoreland; (nb This is his second wife) Bridget Philadelphia, daughter (22), born Lancaster; James (20), son, chemist & druggist, born Lancaster; Philadelphia (80), annuitant, born Wrotham, Kent; Thomas Cock (19), step-son; ironmonger, born Heversham, Westmoreland; Mary Pedder (24), general servant, born Lancaster; Ann Caley (15), under-servant, born Carnforth.
1876 National Probate Calendar
The 1876 National Probate Calendar has VINCE Philadelphia 7 July. The Will of Philadelphia Vince formerly of Lancaster but late of Ulverston both in the County of Lancaster Widow who died 17 June 1876 at Ulverston was proved at Lancaster by John Harrison of Ulverston Draper the sole Executor.
The young James Vince made good. When he died in 1923 his address was The Tower House, Halton, Lancaster, now a grade II listed building.
