Barrow News, 29 December 1888MR. W. LESH
We regret to learn that Mr. W. Lesh died yesterday morning at his residence, The Willows, Poulton-le-Fylde, at the age of 72 years. He had been in failing health for the last few months, and his demise, therefore, was not unexpected. He will be interred at Dalton Cemetery on Tuesday next, January 1st, at 12.30. Mr. Lesh was the representative of one of the oldest families of Low Furness, and until recently, resided on his estate at Newbarns. Prior to the incorporation of the borough, he took an active part in local affairs. He was one of the chief contributors towards St. Paul’s Church, Newbarns, giving the land for both church and vicarage, besides aiding in other ways. He was for many years one of the trustees of Newbarns and Hawcoat School, a position he only resigned very recently, and when the school was enlarged last year he contributed liberally to the building fund. He was a quiet unostentatious man, highly respected by all that knew him.
Lesh Lane, opposite the Farmers Arms in Newbarns, provides a link with the Lesh estate.
William Lesh lived at 32 Newbarns, now known as Malvern House, 81 Hollow Lane (below). There is a stained glass window dedicated to him in the north aisle of St Paul’s Church, Newbarns, in memory of his donation of the site. I am indebted to Michael Quinn for this information, and for the photograph.
