1861 Census
In the 1861 Census Elizabeth Goad (23) Unmarried, engaged in Housework, was living in Gleaston with her parents John Goad (46) Farmer of 66 acres, born Aldingham; mother Elizabeth Goad (41) born Aldingham, together with seven siblings.
A family tree on Ancestry suggests that she married Thomas Mashiter in Ulverston in 1862.
Thomas Mashiter was on the Electoral Register for the Dalton Polling District in 1870 by dint of owning a house in Millom Road, Ireleth.
1871 Census
The 1871 Census has Thomas Mashiter and family living at Dendron School House. Thomas Mashiter (33) Head, Schoolmaster, born Cartmel, lives there with wife Elizabeth Mashiter (33) Schoolmaster’s Wife, born Aldingham; and children Elizabeth (8), Jane (7) and Annie (3), all scholars born Aldingham. In the 1861 Census Thomas had been a schoolmaster at Denderon (sic), a boarder with the Marshall family of farmers.
1881 Census
In the 1881 Census living at Moss House, Leece, are Thomas Mashiter (43) Farmer and Assistant Overseer, born Cartmel; Elizabeth Mashiter (43), born Aldingham; Elizabeth Mashiter junior (18) Single, Dressmaker, born Aldingham; Annie Mashiter (13), Daughter, Scholar, born Aldingham; William Mashiter (6) Son, Scholar, born Aldingham, and Mary Jane Mashiter (2) born Aldingham. Nicholas H. Jackson (10) Nephew, Scholar, born Urswick, and James Wilson (47) Agricultural Labourer (Farm), born Aldingham are also resident.
1891 Census
At Moss Cottage, Leece, in the 1891 Census are Thomas Mashiter (53) Farmer and Assistant Overseer, born Cartmel; Elizabeth Mashiter (53), born Aldingham, as were all the children: William (16); Mary Jane (12) and Thomas (9). Domestic Servant Sarah Chapman (15) born Dalton, completes the household.
1901 Census
The 1901 Census has living at Moss Farm, Leece, the following:
Thomas Mashiter (63) Farmer and Assistant Overseer, born Cartmel; Elizabeth Mashiter (63) Wife, born Aldingham; William Mashiter (26) Single, Farmer’s Son, born Aldingham; Mary J. Mashiter (22) Single, no occupation recorded, born Aldingham; Thomas Mashiter (19) Farmer’s Son, born Aldingham.
1911 Census
In the 1911 Census the household had changed: Thomas, Elizabeth and Thomas Junior are still present, but there is also Agnes Simpson (20) Single, Domestic Servant, born Barrow-in-Furness and John Sill(s) (60), Farm Labourer, born Aldingham.
The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1921 has:
MASHITER Thomas of Gleaston Ulverston Lancashire retired assistant overseer died 24 June 1920 Probate Lancaster 25 January to William Mashiter and Thomas Mashiter farmers and Frederick William Poole solicitor. Effects £2464 12s 7d.
An Assistant Overseer became the local poor law rate collector and carried out other administrative duties relating to poor relief, education and health. In some cases they would have other duties such as compiling lists of those eligible for jury service, ensuring the maintenance of graveyards and even providing a fire engine! (source)
