The Barrow News 22 April 1911 had:

DEATH OF MRS H. JONES. – We regret to record the death of Mrs. Jones, wife of Mr. H. Jones, manager of the Burlington Slate Works, which took place on Wednesday morning at the age of 50 years. Mrs. Jones, who has been confined to her bed for some time, was of a very kind and cheerful disposition, having made many friends during the time she has lived in Kirkby. She came from Wales on the appointment of her husband as manager of the works a few years ago. She leaves a husband and a grown up daughter to mourn her loss, with whom the greatest sympathy is felt.

LARGE ATTENDANCE AT FUNERAL AT KIRKBY

FOR 35 YEARS MANAGER OF BURLINGTON SLATE QUARRIES

The funeral took place at St. Cuthbert’s Churchyard, Kirkby-in-Furness on Thursday in the presence of a large gathering, of Mr. Hugh Jones, who up to the end of December, was the manager of the Burlington Slate Quarries, and one of the most esteemed residents of the district. Mr. Jones died on Monday at the age of 75 years.

               Born at Bethesda, he came of a family well-known in North Wales. He served his apprenticeship at Penrhyn Quarry, Bethesda, where he later attained the position of slate inspector, and obtained a very extensive knowledge of the industry. In addition to being a practical quarryman he took a great interest in geology, and in his early days especially was a very keen student of rock formations.

RECORD PERIOD

               Mr. Jones came to Kirkby from Penrhyn Slate Quarry (one of the two largest slate quarries in the world) in 1903 to take up the position of manager at the Burlington Slate Quarries, which he held for a period of 35 years, during which time he earned the wholehearted respect of his workmen for the able way he overcame difficulties, and for the patience and consideration he invariably showed.

               Until a year ago, Mr. Jones attended regularly to his duties at the quarries. Early last summer he made an extraordinary recovery from a serious illness, but he afterwards enjoyed indifferent health which a month ago became worse.

               Apart from his long association with the slate quarries, he was at the time of his death a foundation manager of the Burlington School, and a trustee of the Methodist Chapel, a member of the Parish Charities Committee, and a vice-president of the Barrow St. David’s Society, whilst for a great number of years he was a member of the Parish Council. In his younger days he was a very keen ambulance worker, and in the absence of the doctor used to conduct the classes himself. His chief hobby was gardening.

               Mr. Jones was the last of four brothers, his youngest brother the Rev. Rhys Jones, of Liverpool, died 18 months ago. Mr. Jones, who was a widower, leaves one daughter.

THE INTERMENT

               Service was held at the Methodist Chapel, Marshside, being conducted by the Rev. R. Trotter, of Millom, and Mr. A. Spry was at the organ.

All quarrymen and retired quarrymen headed the cortege, which was one of the longest seen in the district for many years. On every hand there were evidences of the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The schoolchildren lined up whilst the cortege passed the Burlington School.

The chief mourners were Mr. and Mrs. J. Roberts, son-in-law and daughter; Miss M. Robert, granddaughter; Mrs. Rhys Jones (Liverpool), sister-in-law; Mr. and Mrs. Dodson.

               The bearers were Messrs. T. Brocklebank, F. Todd, R. Woodend, R. Gardiner, F. Lewis, F. Robinson, F. Woodend (employes (sic) of the Burlington Slate Quarries).

               Amongst those present were Messrs. C. H. Higson, R. S. Geddes, T. Robinson, H. M. Higson and staff (of the Burlington Slate Quarries), Mr. G. Lawrence and Mr. Stark (Holker Estate Company), Miss A. Barr, Nurse Wolstenholme, Miss Bessie Lewis, Dr. Menzies, Mr. D. Menzies, Miss Trenwith, Coun. A. Jones, Mr. J. Slinger, Miss A. Tyson, Mr. and Mrs. T. Barr, Mrs. M. Evans, Mrs. J. Cartmell, Messrs. Jack Woodruff, E. Watson, Norvill Rich (Millom), Mr. and Mrs. Bunce, Mrs. and Miss Tyson, Miss W. Robinson, Mrs. J. Bell, Mrs. K. Woodend, Mr. J. Barr, Mr. W. Minnikin.

Lord Richard Cavendish was unable to be present owing to being in London.

Many beautiful floral tributes were afterwards laid on the grave, including wreaths from the staff and employes of Burlington Slate Quarries, Methodist Church, Marsh Side (sic) and the Barrow St. David’s Society.

Mr. J. Martindale was the undertaker.
