Andrew Fox

The Fox family gravestone is unusual in Kirkby Churchyard in that it is high quality slate  which has resisted any weathering.

From Ancestry we find that in the very limited 1841 Census, living at Grizebeck, were Andrew Fox (38) Tailor; Agnes Fox (35); William Fox (17) – occupation not clear but could be slate river; John Fox (15); Hannah Fox (12); Andrew Fox (11), Henry Fox (7) and Agnes Fox (3)

1851 Census

In the 1851 Census Andrew Fox and family are living at Spring Gardens, Grizebeck. Andrew Fox (48) is a Master Tailor, employing one man and one apprentice, born Millom, Cumberland; Agnes Fox (45) Wife, born Kirkby Ireleth – as were all the following; John Fox (26) Son, Unmarried, Tailor (Journeyman); Henry Fox (17) Son, Tailor’s Apprentice; Agnes Fox (12) Daughter, Scholar; Ann Fox (9) Daughter, Scholar; Thomas Fox (5) Son, Scholar; George Riley Fox (1) Son.

1861 Census

By the 1861 Census Andrew Fox is still at Spring Gardens, Grizebeck, He is now 57 years old, a tailor and postmaster. A prestigious job. The rest of the household are Agnes Fox (54) Wife; Ann Fox (20) Daughter, Domestic Servant; Riley Fox (11) Son, Scholar; Thomas Fox (7) Grandson, Scholar; William Fox (4) Grandson, Scholar; John Fox (4) Grandson, Scholar; Henry Fox (4? Months) Grandson; and John Dawson (12) Apprentice Tailor, born Subberthwaite, Lancs.

NB George Riley Fox seems to have been known as Riley rather than George.

1871 Census

In the 1871 Census their address is given as Grizebeck Road. Andrew Fox (67) Master Tailor, born Holborn Hill, Cumberland, is living with Wife Agnes Fox (64); George R. Fox (21) Son, Slate Quarryer (sic); Thomas Fox (17) Grandson, Slate Quarryer; William Fox (14) Grandson, Tailor, and John Woodhouse (4) Grandson, born Liverpool, Lancs.

1881 Census

The 1881 Census has the family living at Grizebeck Row. Andrew Fox (77), Tailor, born Millom, Cumberland shares the household with wife Agnes Fox (74), Thomas Fox (26) Grandson, Slate Quarryman; John Woodhouse (15) Grandson, Slate Quarryman, born Liverpool; and Agnes A. Fox (20) Unmarried, Visitor, born Preston, Lancs.

 

The National Register (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1883 has the following:

FOX Andrew       9 July.    Administration of the Personal Estate of Andrew Fox late of Grizebeck in the Parish of Kirkby Ireleth in the County of Lancaster Tailor who died 5 June 1883 at Grizebeck was granted at Lancaster to Agnes Fox Widow the Relict. Effects £117 7s 6d.

For example, in the 1891 Census he is living on Grizebeck Row, The household is George Riley Fox (42), Slate Quarryman, born Kirkby in Furness; Ann Fox (36) Wife, born Ulverston; Agnes Fox (11) Daughter, Scholar, born Ulverston; Jane Fox (9) Daughter, born Kirkby in Furness; Mary Ann Fox (4) Daughter, Scholar, born Kirkby in Furness; and William Henry Fox (6) Son, Scholar, born Kirkby in Furness.

Three doors away lived his nephew John Woodhouse (24) (see 1871 & 1881 Censuses above), slate quarryman, born Liverpool, and his wife Hannah Fox (21) born Whicham, Cumberland.

1911 Census

By the 1911 Census George’s family had largely grown up and moved out. At High Grizebeck were living George Riley Fox (62) Head, Slate Quarryman, Rockman, born Grizebeck, Lancs; Ann Fox (56) Wife, born Martin (sic), Dalton-in-Furness; Elizabeth Fox (16) Daughter, Single, born Grizebeck; and Walter Lauderdale (2) Grandson, born Grizebeck, Lancs. George and Ann had been married for 32 years, and had 5 children, all surviving.
