1851 Census

The 1851 Census provides a little more information. Joseph Goad (39) Land Owner, born Whitbeck, Cumberland, shares the household with wife Elizabeth Goad (40), born Dalton, Lancs.; and children Ann (14) Scholar; Elizabeth (11) Scholar; Joseph (9) Scholar; Jane (7) Scholar; Hannah (5) Scholar; and Margaret (2). All the children were born in Aldingham (Parish). NB It appears that the birthplaces of Joseph and Elizabeth (the parents) have been transposed.

1861 Census

The 1861 Census shows the household still at Gleaston, comprising Joseph Goad (50) Landed Proprietor, born Aldingham (Parish); Elizabeth Goad (50), born Whitbeck; Hannah Goad (15) Scholar, born Aldingham; Margret (sic) (12) Scholar, born Aldingham; Thomas Goad (9) Scholar, born Aldingham; and Thomas Cragg (4) Grandson, born Dalton.

The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1868 has:

GOAD Joseph    14 December.    The Will of Joseph Goad late of Gleaston in the Parish of Aldingham in the County of Lancaster Yeoman deceased who died 15 October 1867 at Gleaston aforesaid was proved at Lancaster by the oath of Elizabeth Goad of Gleaston aforesaid Widow the Relict the sole Executrix.

By the 1871 Census Joseph had died, but the family lived on in Beck Side, Gleaston, being Elizabeth Goad (60), Widow, Living on Interest from House and Land, born Whitbeck, Cumberland; Elizabeth Goad (31) Daughter, Unmarried, At Home, born Aldingham; Margaret Goad (22) Unmarried, At Home, born Aldingham; Thomas B. Goad (19) Unmarried, Accountant, born Aldingham; Edwin Goad (6) Grandson, born Aldingham; and Alice E. Soulby (2) born Aldingham. Alice Elizabeth Soulby was baptised at Dendron on 22 Jan 1871, daughter of Charles Thomas Soulby, Printer, of Ulverston, and Jane (presumably née Goad).

1881 Census

In the 1881 Census, still at Gleaston, Elizabeth Goad (70) Widow, Annuitant, born Whitbeck, shares the house with daughter Annie Atkinson (42) Widow, no occupation recorded, born Newton (sic), Lancs; and Edwin Goad (15) Grandson, General Clerk, born Gleaston, and Frank B. Goad (15) Scholar, born Ulverston.

1891 Census

The 1891 Census sees Elizabeth having moved to Kirkby in Furness.
