Ellen Rigg was Edward Sankey’s (Jnr) sister. The Riggs owned property in Barrow, in which various Sankeys lived. Ellen and Henry lived on Croslands Park, near the roundabout.

1881 Census

In the 1881 Census Helen (sic) Sankey was living with her parents and siblings at 65 Smeaton Street, Barrow. The household consisted of Edward Sankey (42) Carter, born Lancashire (as were all the following); wife Isabella Sankey (40); with children John Sankey (20) Plasterer; Elizabeth Sankey (18) Dressmaker; Mary Sankey (13) Bookbinder; Isabella Sankey (11) Scholar; Helen (sic) Sankey (8) no occupation recorded; Edward Sankey (6) no occupation recorded; and Annie Sankey (1).

1891 Census

The 1891 Census has the family at 31 (probably) Strand, Barrow. Edward Sankey (52) is a horsekeeper, born Inskip, Lancs.; wife Isabella (40) born Claughton, Lancs.; Mary Sankey (23) Dressmaker, born Barrow, Lancs. (as were all the children); Ellen Sankey (18) Upholsterer; Edward Sankey (16) Printer/Compositor; Annie Sankey (11) Scholar; and James Sankey (8) Scholar.

1905 Electoral Register

In 1895 Ellen Sankey married Henry Rigg, Barrow. Henry c 1868. Henry Rigg appears in Kelly’s Trade Directory 1895at 46 Cavendish Street; in the 1905 Electoral Register he is living at Croslands Park, where he is registered as having 2 freehold houses at 42 Parade Street and 52 Cavendish Street, Barrow.

Henry Rigg was baptised 1 September 1867 in Barrow.

1871 Census

The 1871 Census has Henry Rigg at 12 Top Newton Street, Barrow. The household is father Anthony Rigg (37) Shoemaker, born Lancashire (as were all of the following); mother Jane Barrow Rigg (29); and the siblings are Elizabeth Jane Rigg (13) Scholar; Mary Ann Rigg (11) Scholar; Martha Rigg (8) Scholar; Henry Rigg (3) and Margaret Jane Rigg (1).

1881 Census

The 1881 Census has Henry Rigg living with his family at 39 Crellin Street, Barrow. They are Anthony Rigg (47) Shoemaker, born Cartmel, Lancs; Jane B. Rigg (39) born Cartmel; Henry Rigg (13) Scholar, born Barrow; Margt. J. Rigg (11) Scholar; Anthony W. Rigg (9) Scholar; Emma Rigg (7) Scholar; Marian Rigg (5) and Jane B. Rigg (1).

1891 Census

The 1891 Census sees the Rigg’s further down the road at 27 Crellin Street. Head Anthony Rigg (57) Shoe Maker, born Haverthwaite, Lancs., shares the household with wife Jane B. Rigg (49), born Holker, Lancs., and children (all born Barrow) Henry Rigg (23) Shoe maker; Anthony W. Rigg (19) Shoe Maker’s Apprentice; Jessamine Rigg (sic) (17) No occupation recorded; Marion Rigg (15) Assisting at home; Jane B. Rigg (11) Scholar; Ralph Rigg (8) Scholar. There are also two Boarders: Fred A. Robinson (18) Shipyard Labourer, born Blackburn, Lancs.; and Milton? Robinson (16) Shipyard Labourer, born Blackburn, who is presumably his brother.

1901 Census

In the 1901 Census Ellen Rigg (28) and Henry Rigg (33) Boot Maker, born Barrow, are living at 44 Parade Street (next door to Edward – Paper Merchant and Printer - and Catherine Sankey at 42).

1911 Census

In the 1911 Census they are living at Croslands Park, Barrow (no house number). Henry is a Boot Dealer (own account).

National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1930

Ellen Rigg died 15 December 1929, of 79 Croslands Park, Barrow aged 57 yrs, leaving £2922 14s 4d to Henry Rigg, Boot and Shoe Dealer.

Henry Rigg died 4 October 1938, leaving effects of £45603 18s 7d to Ralph Rigg, boot & shoe dealer; Annie Fisher (wife of John Thomas Fisher) and Frederick Kewley, boot and shoe company manager.
