The Barrow News 14 December 1895 reported:

BOATMAN DROWNED AT PIEL

Yesterday morning, a case of drowning occurred in Piel anchorage, which has cast a gloom over the neighbourhood. Mr. Johnny Pennington, the well-known ferryman, took a pilot to the s.s. “Test”, bound for Ulverston, and on making the return journey, his sailing boat was capsized, and he was drowned. The weather was very rough and squally. Mr. Curwen, the pilot, witnessed the accident, and with two others at once proceeded to Foulney Island, near which the sad occurrence took place, and at this place the body was washed ashore. The boat was also found. The deceased, who was the son of Mr. John Pennington, of the hotel, Roa Island, leaves a widow and six children.
