John Martin (servant, bachelor) married Elizabeth Robinson (Spinster – who signed with a cross indicating that she was illiterate) on 7 December 1829 at the Priory Church, Cartmel.
Septimus Robinson Martin’s birth was registered in Ulverston in Q2 1849. He was baptised in the Priory Church, Cartmel, on 8 July 1849 (Lancashire Online Parish Clerk).
The same source identifies the following children of John & Elizabeth Martin:
Ellen (baptised 18 July 1830); Edward (bapt. 26 August 1832); John (bapt. 28 September 1834); Thomas (bapt. 18 March 1838); Matthew (bapt. 18 October 1840); William (bapt. 5 July 1846); .. so Septimus does seem to be the seventh child.
1861 Census
The 1861 Census tells that the Martin family were living in Flookburgh. John Martin (56) Head, Railway Labourer, born Cark, shares the household with wife Elizabeth Martin (51) born Flookburgh; and sons Edward Martin (29) Railway Labourer, born Flookburgh; William Martin (15) Fisherman, born Flookburgh; and Septimus R. Martin (12) Scholar, born Flookburgh.
1871 Census
In the 1871 Census Septimus Martin (21) is an unmarried general servant living at Gleaston Castle and working for John Ormandy (36) unmarried farmer of 271 acres. There are nine servants altogether, seven men and two women.
1881 Census
The 1881 Census has Septimus Martin (31) living in Castle Street (Yard), Dalton, as an Iron Miner, born Cartmel with his wife Mary Martin (30), born Broughton, and young daughter Elizabeth Martin (1), born Dalton.
1891 Census
By the 1891 Census they had moved to 8 Buccleuch Street, Dalton, where Sephinas (sic) Martin (41) is still an iron miner, living with Mary Martin (40), born Broughton-in-Furness. They have two children: Elizabeth Martin (11) and John Martin (8) scholar, both born Dalton. Robert Park (78) widower, father-in-law, Pensioner, born Dalton, also lives with them.
1901 Census
They were still at the same address in the 1901 Census, with Septimus, Mary and Elizabeth living there. Elizabeth Martin (21) is now a dressmaker, born Ulverston (sic). John Martin isn’t present, and neither is Robert Park. However, there are two more children, Robert Martin (9) and Mary P. Martin (4), both born Dalton.
1911 Census
The 1911 Census sees the Martins at 10, Ann Street, Dalton. Septimus and Mary have been married for 37 years, and have had five children, three still living. This means that John and Thomas Martin (born 1904) have both died. The other three children are still living with their parents: Robert Martin (19), single, is a General Labourer (above ground) at an iron mine; Mary Martin (14) has no listed occupation; and Elizabeth (31) has been married for 9 years (no children) to Joseph Stick (32) Attendant to Steam Travelling Crane, born Ulverston, Lancs.
1939 England and Wales Register
Mary Martin (DoB 2X March 1852) was still living at 10 Ann Street, Dalton, for the 1939 England and Wales Register. Living with her was son Robert Martin (DoB 26 June 1891), single, a Fitter’s Labourer.
