Living (among others) on Hindpool Road, Barrow is Ernest Sharrocks (DoB 18 February 1881) Single, General Labourer. The number is indistinct, but could be 32/1. Is this a Lodging House, or a flat? Nor did I find any link between Ernest Sharrocks and the Gosselin/Goslings at first. But read on ….
1881 Census
This Ernest Sharrocks is probably the Ernest Sharrocks baptised on 10 April 1881 at St. Clement’s Church, Rochdale, son of William and Ann Sharrocks. William was a Miner, and lived at Outgate. This family were living at 6 Lower Calder, Spotland, Rochdale in the 1881 Census. William Sharrocks (34) Coal Miner, born Rochdale (as were the whole family) is Head, married to Ann Sharrocks (30) Cotton Drawer; with children John E. Sharrocks (10) Scholar; Mary Ann Sharrocks (7) Scholar; Nelson Sharrocks (4); James Sharrocks (2) and Ernest Sharrocks (1 mnth).

This may be the same place as 6 Shaw Lane, Butterworth, Milnrow, nr Oldham, in the 1891 Census. The household was William Sharrocks (transcribed as Sharrock by Ancestry) (44) Coal Miner, born Rochdale, Lancs; Ann Sharrocks (40) Cotton Bot? Drawer, born Rochdale; Mary A. Sharrocks (17) Cotton Back Tenter, born Rochdale; Colonel (sic) N. Sharrocks (14) Cotton Doffer, born Rochdale; James Sharrocks (12) Cotton Doffer, born Rochdale; Ernest Sharrocks (10) Cotton Doffer, born Rochdale; George Sharrocks (8) Scholar, born Birtle-cum-Bamford, Lancs; William Sharrocks (5) Scholar, born Butterworth, Lancs; Celan (sic) Sharrocks (3) born Butterworth; and Hannah Sharrocks (1) born Butterworth.

1901 Census
In the 1901 Census some of the above are living at 33/35 Kiln Lane, Butterworth, Milnrow. William has died, and Ann is now Ann Brierley, with three stepchildren. Ernest Sharrocks (20) is a Coal Hewer, Underground, born Rochdale, as is brother George Sharrocks, born Openshaw. William Sharrocks (15) born Milnrow, also works underground, though his occupation is illegible; sister Selena Sharrocks (13) is a Piecer Woollen, born Milnrow, as is Hannah Sharrocks (11), born Milnrow. The step-children are Herbert (12), Ernest (7) and Emily (9) Brierley. There is also a grand-daughter, Edith Sharrocks (9) born Milnrow, and a Boarder, Wallie Farrar (22) Coal Hewer, Underground, born Halifax, Yorks.
However, this Ernest Sharrocks (24) of 6 Shaw Lane, Milnrow, father William Nelson Sharrocks, got married in Milnrow on 19 November 1904 to Mary Hannah Greenhalgh (34) of 8 Major Street, Milnrow, father William Greenhalgh, Woollen Operative. Normally, there would be an indication that the father was deceased, and the 1939 Register listed Ernest Sharrocks as Single.
1911 Census
In the 1911 Census living at 6 Shaw Lane, Milnrow, are Ernest Sharrocks (30) Coal Miner Hewer, born Bury Baitle, Lancs; Mary Hannah Sharrocks (41) born Newhey, Lancs; Hannah Sharrocks (5) born Milnrow; and Selina Sharrocks (4) born Pendlebury, Lancs. Another Sharrocks family, of similar ages, live next door at 7 Shaw Lane. Head John Edward Sharrocks is also a Coal Miner Hewer, and his wife Mary Sharrocks (40).
Mary H. Sharrocks died in December 1911, death registered in Rochdale.
Charles Emil Gosselin (Gosling)
The Cunard White Star liner RMS Lancastria docked at Liverpool (ex-New York and Boston) on 17 November 1936. On board were Harold E. Gosling (23) 6, Oxford Street, Barrow-in-Furness, Machinist, and Charles E. Gosling (52) Turner, of the same address.
Charles Emil Gosling proved very difficult to find on Ancestry, or at least, being sure that I had the right one. There is one born in Suffolk at about the right time, or it could be the one I found in Navy records on Ancestry. This one was born 26 November 1881 in St Helier, Jersey, where he was working as a Labourer. He signed on for 12 years on 20 September 1900. His height is given as 5ft 2¾ins. Service no. 380731. He served on various ships including Naiad; Erebus (not Franklin’s); Fisgard; Bonaventure; and when war was imminent he re-enlisted on 19 April 1913. There is a note on the record saying “Missing as the result of the loss of submarine Ex (unreadable but probably E7 or E15, which were scuttled in 1915) in the Dardanelles and reported believed to be a prisoner of war. A Charles E. Gosling married Clara A. Edmondson in Portsmouth in Q4 1912. Her surname matches the middle name of son Harold on the headstone, and the date fits with the naval record above.
There appear to be 18 Charles Goslings who served in the Army in WW1.
The ship’s manifest for the Cunard liner RMS Samaria, leaving Liverpool for Boston on 23 September 1923 includes: Chas. Gosling (38) Engine Driver, of 261 Rawlinson St, Barrow-in-Furness, along with wife Clara Gosling (35) Housewife, and son Harold Gosling (10) Scholar.
The mystery of why Charles’ wife is not buried with him appears to be answered by an obituary in the Baltimore Sun, USA. 17 November 1930, for Clara Annie Gosling, née Edmondson; husband Charles E. Gosling.

This looks clumsy, but is as it appears, printed by the dot-matrix printer of the day.
It took me a great deal of time and imagination to make some connections. The writing on the 1939 Register is clear, but difficult to make out. Ancestry transcribes the first named as ‘Proken’, whereas I originally thought that they were Parkers. Nothing appeared on Ancestry, or Cumbria BMD, when I tried all sorts of combinations, likely or unlikely. Eventually, I found a solution with Picken, with a family tree on Ancestry which linked the Pickens to Sharrocks.
The family tree of RJN Hunt suggests that Alfred Picken married Salena (sic) Sharrocks on 23 December 1911 in Milnrow, Lancs.
This enabled me to find out more, and eventually, find their grave in Barrow Cemetery. The Sharrocks/Gosselin/Gosling grave is almost adjacent to the Picken grave, with Silverwood in between. It is also of a similar style.

From Ancestry we can learn:
Alfred Picken registered for WW1 service in Bexley, Kent. In a document that I had not seen before, entitled WW1 Registrations, Index to Record of Arrivals, is Picken, Alfred, old address Little-Wild? House, Milnrow; new address 65 Riverdale Road, Erith, Married, Iron Planer, dated 16 November 1916.
1891 Census
In the 1891 Census the Picking (sic) family are at 1 Stanhope Street, Openshaw, Lancs. Moses Picking (sic) (42) Bricksetter, born Stirchley, Salop, shares the home with Mary Picking (40) born Dudley, Staffs; three daughters and three sons, including Alfred Picking (7), born Bradford, Lancs.
1901 Census
In the 1901 Census he was living at 104 Grey Mare Lane, Newton Heath, Manchester. The household is Mary A. Picken (49) Widow, Grocer Shopkeeper (Own account), born Staffordshire; Alfred Picken (17) Apprentice Mechanic, born Manchester, Lancs; Edith Picken (14) Cotton Weaver, born Manchester; and Lavinia Picken (10) no occupation recorded, born Manchester.

So, to sum up:
Ernest Sharrocks probably did marry.
Alfred Picken married his sister, Selina Sharrocks.
Charles Gosling married Clara Edmondson, who travelled down to Portsmouth where he was in the Royal Navy. Alfred Picken was boarding with the Edmondsons in the 1911 Census.
Clara Gosling died in America.
Charles Gosling was living with the Pickens, Alfred and Selina, in the 1939 Register.
Charles Gosling MAY have been born in Jersey, or not!
