North-Western Daily MailMILITARY FUNERAL
The funeral took place at Barrow, with military honours today, of James Hargreaves, aged 33, of 13 Parade-street, Barrow. Prior to the war the deceased was a member of the Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry, and during the war he had considerable service with the Coldstream Guards and the Royal Air Force. His health suffered as a result of military service, and he had been ailing from the time of his demobilisation, nearly two years ago. For the interment members of locally stationed troops turned out, and also provided the firing party and the bugler for the usual formalities at the graveside. Members of the Barrow territorials and the Comrades’ Club were also present. The coffin was taken to St. Mark’s Church, where the vicar (Rev. H. B. Horne) conducted the first part of the burial service. Rev. Horne also officiated at the cemetery.
From Ancestry:
James Hargreaves could have been another victim of the flu epidemic. He had been discharged from the RAF on 18 April 1919 with a 50% disability due to neurasthenia, attributable to his service.
In the 1891 Census the family was at 40 Robert Street, Barrow, with the only children being Amy (5) and James (3).
James came from a large family. They were already living at 13 Parade Street at the time of the 1901 Census, when the household consisted of:
William James Hargreaves (37), Head, steam engine fitter, born Preston Lancs; Laura Hargreaves (33), born Monmouthshire; Amy (15), born Preston; James (13), born Carnforth; Laura (9), born Barrow; William (7), born Barrow; Florence (6), born Barrow; Frederick (4) born Barrow; George (2), born Barrow; Walter (8 months), born Barrow. There were also two lodgers, William Evans (24), Iron Furnace Fitter, born Newcastle, Northumberland; and William Blythe (27), Steam Engine Fitter, born Ireland.
By the 1911 Census, Amy and James had left home, father William (47) was an engine fitter in the Naval Construction Works, wife Laura (42) had given birth to 10 children, all of whom had lived; Laura Hargreaves (19) was single, with no recorded occupation; William (17) was an engine fitter in the Naval Construction Works; Florence (16) was an apprentice milliner; Frederick (14), George (12), Walter (10), Norman (9) and Doris (7) were all scholars.
In 1911, James appears as a visitor to the Cresser family at 410A Stoney Stanton Rd, Coventry, where he is motor man and turner. The Cresser parents were both born in Birmingham, but their 2 of their 3 children were born in Barrow in Furness.
