Information about deaths before the expansion of the local press is limited. All I have been able to find is the following:
Barrow, Furness and North Western Daily Times, Monday 28 August 1871An inquest was held on Saturday afternoon, before Dr. Hall, deputy coroner, on Robert Jones, a boy of six years of age, who was found drowned the previous day. A verdict of ‘Found drowned’ was returned.

A Robert Jones was born in Dalton in 1865 (Cumbria BMD D/18/98), with his mother’s maiden name being McDonnel. There is no Jones/McDonnel (or McDonnell) marriages recorded on Cumbria BMD.
